PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

Happy New Year! I sincerely hope you had a wonderful holiday season. The holidays are a time of giving, but wouldn’t it be great if we could show the same level of love and generosity throughout the year? I am proud of the 2023 contributions our club made to many local organizations which in turn helped those in need in our community. I hope we can increase our level of giving as the needs in our community continue to grow. Youth, seniors, veterans, unhoused, underserved - they all need our help in some way or another.

We will be hosting several fundraisers, social events, and community service events and projects throughout 2024. You can learn all about what we’re doing by visiting our website, livermorevalleyrotary.org

If you have a desire to make a difference and give back, I invite you to visit us at one of our meetings or events. The fun and fellowship is real: great people with great ideas doing great things . We meet Tuesday mornings at 8:15 at Las Positas College. Visit our website for more detailed information.

All the best to you this year! LET’S DO MORE IN 2024!

Yours in Rotary,

Sherri Simoni

Annually, the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore (RFL) invites community organizations to apply for grants that support deserving projects that benefit our community. Community Grants may be awarded for up to $10,000, depending on the project.

Applications for the 2024 Grants are available now on the RFL website and on our club website, and will be accepted through midnight on February 1, 2024. Please visit rotarianfoundationlivermore.org for complete information. Grants will be awarded in April 2024.

All members of our club - the Rotary Club of Livermore Valley - join with members of the "noon club" - the Rotary Club of Livermore - to comprise the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that extends our service to the community.

RFL grants support the vision and mission of the Foundation.

CELEBRATING THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH

We enjoyed meeting Claire Sahn, outstanding Granada High School senior, at our December 19th meeting. Principal Clark Conover shared that Claire
has been the GHS math club co-president, and has been a member of the GHS Chess Club, The Cybersecurity Club, and the National Honor Society.

Outside of school, she is a member of the National Charity League, volunteering for over 25 hours each year beginning in 7th grade. She is also an accomplished gymnast. Her past honors include State Champion & Regional Champion (4 times) and 2-time National Champion! She has even competed at the international level.

Claire's summers are typically busy. She has participated in the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) program, where she spent 4 weeks at UC Davis immersed in math and science. Her capstone research project included a presentation on the role of mathematics in economics and game theory.

She also enjoyed learning about civic government by working in Livermore City Hall in summer 2023, where she focused on ways to increase public art and tourism in Livermore.

Academically, Claire shines. Her 4.6 GPA reflects her outstanding work in rigorous Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and honors courses.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE BED BUILD

Our club supports and collaborates with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit with the mission to build, assemble, and deliver quality bunk beds to children in need. Hundreds of children in our area do not have a bed to call their own. SHP's motto: No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town.

Rotarians and community members are invited to participate in a bed building workday on an upcoming Saturday, held at the SHP barn in Livermore (on CrossWinds property):
  • Saturday, January 13
  • Saturday, February 17
  • Saturday, March 9
Donations are also welcome - bedding, pillows, and blankets are in great need. Please contact Rotarian Dave Goulart if you can help with donations.

Please send an email to christy.curtis@shpbeds.org if you can help build.

SHARING HOLIDAY CHEER

Our club combined service with fun last month
as we shared holiday cheer with children and veterans.

CAPE Children's Holiday Party

Continuing our annual tradition, we partnered with the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore and the Rotary Club of Livermore to put on a Christmas party for children who attend CAPE Headstart Preschool in Livermore. Over 100 children and their family members enjoyed an afternoon of food, games, music, magic, and a visit from the man in the red suit. Rotarians donated gifts, clothing, and books. We partnered with Good News Bears to give each child a cuddly stuffed animal. And local Interactors pitched in to volunteer at the party.

Veterans Holiday Luncheon

We also shared lunch and fellowship with residents of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Livermore. Thanks to Rotarian Graham Scott for leading our club in this tradition for over 10 years. We love hearing the veterans share their stories.

CHEER & FELLOWSHIP

Thanks to Dave and June Bedford for hosting our holiday party! Rotarians, friends, partners, and guests enjoyed a fun evening! Shout out to our president, Sherri Simoni, for coordinating the event and ensuring we all had a great time. Here are just a few glimpses of the joy we shared . . .
