CHALK TALK with Ed Schumann

Today Ed gave us an insight into Olympic curling. The sport of curling was invented in 16th Century Scotland. Players would move heavy rocks over the frozen lakes. Curling made its Olympic debut at the 1924 Olympics in France.

Modern Olympic curling consists of men's teams, women's teams, and a mixed doubles team.

The United States this year took fifth in the men's event, fourth in the women's and the mixed doubles brought a silver medal home!
TODAY'S PROGRAM: CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CALIFORNIA WATER SERVICE (Cal Water)

We welcomed fellow Rotarian John Freeman today as our speaker. John is from Stockton, California. He is a second-generation Californian, and has been with Cal Water since 1987. John is currently in the role of District Manager for California Water Service. The company is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2026.

Very few companies make it to 100 years, and this puts Cal Water among an elite, and small group with corporations like Coca-Cola, Harley Davidson, General Electric, and Ford to name a few.

Cal Water was born in 1926 during the time known as the Roaring  Twenties. California was the fastest growing state in the nation. It was a time of opportunity, optimism and westward migration. All this growth required water.

The enduring principles of Cal Water remain in place today:
  • Excellence in Engineering
  • Commitment to Public Health
  • Best-in-Class Customer Service
  • Community Partnership
Cal Water's values resonate strongly with our Rotary Four Way Test. Water is foundational to public health, economic development, and quality of life. For 100 years, they have served the communities they are in, and service is a shared value in Rotary.

We thank you John, for your commitment to Cal Water, our community, and to our Rotary Club. We were grateful to learn more about Cal Water today!

TODAY'S 10-SPOT

George Duarte's name was drawn as the "winner" of the most recent 10-Spot board, so George has the honor of designating the recipient of Board #83's donations. Our contributions will support the work of the Rotary Foundation!
