TODAY'S 10-SPOT

TODAY'S PROGRAM: CAL FIRE FOUNDATION

We welcomed Angie Carmignani, Executive Director of the California Fire Foundation, who shared the role of this important nonprofit organization in the lives of firefighters, their families, and the communities they serve throughout the State of California, including the Tri-Valley.

The Cal Fire Foundation provides a number of programs that fulfill its mission to serve and support the 40,000+ firefighters in California:

The Daniel Terry Scholarship, named after the CFF founder, provides $3,000 pre year scholarships to college students who have lost a parent in the line of duty. Since its inception in 2007, over $200,000 have been awarded to over 100 students.

The Annual Memorial Ceremony in Capitol Park, Sacramento, honors all firefights who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, and each year honors those who have most recently fallen, while also recognizing their families for their sacrifice. This past weekend, 30 new names were added to the memorial.

SAVE - Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency - is a program that provides immediate assistance to those displaced by fire. Over $8 million has been donated to victims of recent fires in California.

Firefighters on Your Side is an educational component that helps community members know how to be prepared for a wildfire disaster.

Angie noted that one of the newer problems facing firefighters and those affected by wildfire is the toxicity - released into the air and the soil - created by lithium batteries now common because of electric cars and bikes. 17 of the firefighter deaths in the past year were due to job-related cancers.

Jill Duerig returned from her Rotary trip to Guatemala and presented President Sarah and our club the flag from Club Rotario Los Altos.

And knowing that Sarah is a beekeeper, Jill also gave Sarah some Mayan honey.
