OPENING THE MEETING
  • President Sarah Palmer called the meeting to order at 8:15 AM

  • Pledge of Allegiance - Led by Terri DeLima

  • Song of the Day -  Jerry Hawkins led us all in "When I'm 64" 

  • Thought of the Day - Melanie Henry brought us: "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success" by Henry Ford

  • Joke of the Day -  Melanie also brought us this joke: "A woman brings her dog on a date night at the cinema.  During the movie, her dog whimpers at sad scenes and howls at suspenseful moments.  Afterward, the man can't resist asking: "Did your dog enjoy the movie?"  She sighs, "Yes - but he totally hated the book!"

Topic: Recap of First 100 Days Since DA Transition

Key Points from Annie Esposito’s Presentation:

  • Transition and Focus:
    • DA Ursula Jones Dickson took over following the recall of former DA Pamela Price.
    • The new administration is working diligently to rebuild prosecutorial capacity and trust
  • Policy Shifts:
    • Renewed commitment to charging crimes appropriately, including the use of "enhancements" for gun-related offenses.
    • The protection of the public has been reaffirmed as the top priority.
  • Victim Advocacy:
    • Emphasis on giving victims a voice in the justice process.
    • The office is working to uphold and protect victims' rights more robustly.

Q&A Highlights with Rotary Members:

  • Parole Board Authority:
    • Concern raised: “Who gave the parole board so much power?”
    • Response: The DA’s office must be present at parole hearings, alongside victims and their advocates.
    • Under the previous administration:
      • No DA representative attended parole hearings.
      • Victims were not informed of upcoming hearings.
    • New approach ensures all perspectives are heard, which can significantly impact parole decisions.
